In this special one-hour workshop, All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, Brian Conway, will teach beginning fiddle players a simple March (and depending on the class level a simple jig) and the elements of Sligo style in Irish music. Emphasis will be on dissecting the phrasing and bowing, which makes each of these traditional dance tunes sound Irish.
Skills Needed: Beginners should have been playing for at least six months.
What to Bring: A recording device and Brian will provide sheet music
Teacher: Brian Conway, the 1986 All-Ireland senior fiddle champion, has several recordings to his credit. They include three solo releases, First Through the Gate in 2002, Consider the Source in 2008, and Wallace Avenue in 2025 as well as two trio albums, The Apple in Winter (with Tony DeMarco and Caesar Pacifici) in 1981 and A Tribute to Andy McGann (with Joe Burke and Felix Dolan) in 2000. In addition to being one of the leading Irish traditional fiddlers in the world , Brian is one of the most respected instructors of traditional Irish music alive today. Brian has taught numerous All-Ireland winning students and three of his students have gone on to play fiddle in Riverdance. In 2023 Brian published a music instructional book titled The Brian Conway Fiddle Method which breaks down Brian’s teaching method into an easy to understand instructional book.
*Most classes and workshops are geared towards late-teens and adults. Younger learners will benefit most starting with private lessons.
