6:30pm – 8:30pm
Dusty Strings 3406 Fremont Ave N
Maximum Enrollment: 16
Registration & Refund Deadline: Tuesday, May 27, 2025
Wondering how much you should practice? What makes for a good practice routine? Looking for inspiration to make practicing more fun? With this creative workshop, you’ll emerge with an efficient, enjoyable, and personalized practice routine. Using Jonathan’s engaging “So That” exercise, you’ll clarify your overall musical goals and create mini objectives. You’ll learn essential skills, including an effective warm-up exercise, optimal practice environment, and how to find inspiration. The workshop also features Jonathan’s infamous teaching assistant, Oste, a full-size human skeleton model, who reveals how you can make small physical adjustments to play (and sing!) with less effort and more efficiency. All instruments welcome!
Skills Needed: Beginners and up. Guitar, ukulele, mandolin, and banjo players should know at least three chords. Fiddle, piano, and flute/pennywhistle players should be able to play a simple tune. Bodhrán and cajón players should know basic rhythms.
What to Bring: Your instrument, something to take notes, and a recording device such as a smartphone. To help you maintain momentum on your musical journey, you’ll receive several handouts and resources for inspiration and motivation.
Teacher: Jonathan Shue believes everyone can sing and play an instrument and that it’s never too late to learn! It’s all about breaking things down into small, manageable steps, defining specific goals, and developing a pathway toward achieving them. A teaching artist for over twenty years, Jonathan has taught music and drama throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and at the University of Washington, where he studied Integrative Alexander Technique. He has produced plays, studio albums, concerts, and music events and is the former Education Director of Dusty Strings Music School, where he has taught guitar, songwriting, and voice since 2015.
