Description: The bodhrán (pronounced “BOW-ron”) is a frame drum frequently used in Irish music. This workshop will focus on how to hold the bodhrán and tipper (stick) and how to get a nice clear tone from the instrument. You’ll explore different types of Irish dance rhythms like reels, jigs, slip jigs, polkas, waltzes, mazurkas, and hornpipes, and practice keeping a steady beat. We will discuss choosing a bodhrán and tipper, the place of the bodhrán in Irish traditional music, and playing with others.
Skills Needed: None!
What to Bring: Your own bodhrán and tipper. Bodhráns and tippers are available for purchase at Dusty Strings.
Teacher: Bill Woods is the bodhrán player for the band, Keltoi; and is the author of three bodhrán books published by Mel Bay Publications: Bodhrán: the Basics, Bodhrán: Beyond the Basics, and Bodhrán Grooves.
