Sprightly strathspeys, roaring reels, joyful jigs, and wistful waltzes! Scottish music sounds spectacular on harp, and there are many tunes that are dearly loved throughout the world. Renowned Scottish harpist Rachel Hair will teach you some of these tunes, including melody and left hand accompaniment, as well as the stories and history behind the music.
Skills Needed: For beginner to advanced beginner harp players
What to Bring: Please bring your harp or call ahead to reserve one. There are limited harps available for this workshop, so please contact us in advance by emailing music@dustystrings.com or calling (206) 634-1662. Rachel teaches by ear and can also provide sheet music for those who wish to use it. You can also bring a smartphone or audio recording device.
Teacher: Based in Glasgow, a city renowned for its melting pot of musical and cultural style, Rachel Hair has toured extensively throughout Europe, the US and beyond. She has released seven critically acclaimed albums and performs regularly in duos with Scottish guitarists Ron Jappy and Manx Gaelic and singer Ruth Keggin. A much sought-after soloist and teacher, Rachel has taught and performed at Celtic harp festivals throughout Europe and the UK, the United States, New Zealand, Japan, and Australia. She has published five books of harp arrangements and compositions and is a three time nominated Tutor of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Rachel is the visiting resident Celtic harp tutor at Europe’s biggest harp shop in Rhenen in the Netherlands and also journeys once a month to the Isle of Man where she teaches Manx Celtic harp and directs the Manx harp ensemble Claasagh.
