A rare example of a pre- Bacon & Day instrument, this #2 Special banjo was likely made in the very early 1920s in the inaugural days of Bacon's Connecticut factory. It features a slim maple neck with a pronounced V-profile at the 1 7/32" nut that rounds out to a D-shape as it approaches the 11 1/2" maple pot. The classic Bacon-style tone ring provides brilliance and punch to the warmer percussive quality of the nylon strings.
Much if not all of the hardware is original. The original tuners are functional and holding tune, and the original fretwire is in great shape, with all notes ringing out cleanly along the 26 3/4" scale. Understated yet elegant inlays adorn the fretboard and both sides of the headstock. With its old world craftsmanship and charm, this banjo is an excellent classic nylon frailer for any vintage collection!
