Description
A restored 1967 Martin D-28 in very good player-grade vintage condition featuring Brazilian rosewood back and sides and a replaced Sitka spruce top and including a hard-shell case. A real player's instrument, this a well-seasoned road warrior with a powerful, articulate, tone. An immaculately clear sounding guitar with a bit more sparkle than your standard '60s Brazilian rosewood D-28, due in part to the replaced top. The re-top also required the replacement of a 1/8" wide strip of Brazilian rosewood around the sides beneath the binding, all of which was expertly done here in Seattle by the highly reputable Cat Fox. The work is very clean and discreet, and the new Sitka top fits the back and sides perfectly. Bracing is a scalloped rear-shifted X pattern and the bridge plate is flamed maple. The sides were refinished in the course of the top replacement, but the back appears to retain the original gloss lacquer.
This guitar plays great with action measuring 7/64" and 5/64" from the 12th fret to the bottom of the low and high strings, respectively, with .007" relief in the neck and healthy saddle exposure above the bridge. Further repairs and modifications include tuning machine replacement, a fully stabilized headstock crack with associated headstock finish overspray, and the "speed neck" treatment with the sanding of the finish from the back of the neck. There are a few spots of shallow pitting in the ebony fretboard around the first two frets beneath the inside four strings. The frets are recently leveled, crowned, and polished to a high shine.
