Learn to accompany songs playing chords and simple melodies on mandolin in this class for total beginners! We’ll start at the very beginning—how to hold it, how to tune it—and grow from there, layering new skills over familiar songs as we learn how to pluck and strum along. You'll emerge a capable mandolinist who can add parts to songs and pick with friends in a variety of styles—all in just four weeks!

Skills Needed: No previous experience necessary.

What to Bring: Students should have their own instruments and a pick (plectrum); a strap and electronic tuner are helpful; recording devices welcome. Need to rent a mandolin? Dusty Strings has an affordable rental program. Please come to the shop or call (206) 634-1662 at least a week before the start of class as rentals are subject to availability.

Teacher: For the past 25 years, Wes Weddell has worked multiple shifts in the engine room of Seattle’s roots music scene, keeping his hand in abundant projects as frontman, sideman, writer, teacher, and community-builder. In 2010, Weddell began working with The Bushwick Book Club Seattle, an expanding non-profit collective of songwriters who each compose new music inspired by literature to share in monthly showcases focused around specific books. He is now the organization’s Associate Director. Along the way he has continued to teach a variety of instruments and styles across generations, helping hundreds find the joy of playing and singing with others.
