Laurel Canyon in the late 1960s and early ‘70s was one of the most fertile pockets of songwriting in American music history. In this workshop, we'll dig into the heart of that moment through five songs by three of its defining voices: Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. We'll learn arrangements that are as satisfying to play alone as they are with friends — songs built for singing and sharing. Whether you've loved this music for decades or are coming to it fresh, you'll leave with five songs that feel genuinely good to play. Chord sheets and notation will be provided ahead of class for those who like to come prepared.
Songs: Both Sides Now — Joni Mitchell
Big Yellow Taxi — Joni Mitchell
Helplessly Hoping — Crosby, Stills & Nash
Teach Your Children — Crosby, Stills & Nash
I Feel the Earth Move – Carole King
Skills Needed: Be comfortable with open position chords (G, C, D, Am, Em). Some fingerpicking experience is helpful but not required.
What to Bring: Guitar, tuner, and capo
Teacher: Chris Haugen is a nationally recognized guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. With years of experience recording and performing popular and folk styles, Chris helps beginner to advanced guitarists build skills on guitar, slide guitar, lap steel, Weissenborn, and more.
As a teacher, Chris encourages students to learn the music they want to play. "Music is a lifetime of learning and enjoyment, self-expression, and imagination," he says. "It's jamming with friends, time to unwind, and beach bonfires." Chris is equally at home working with both acoustic and electric guitar students.
Chris's recent release "Lakeside Sessions", recorded in his studio on Lake Washington, has over 1.2M streams and was selected FYC 2024 Grammy awards. From Classic Rock to Khruangbin, Beatles to Beck, Grateful Dead to Radiohead, Chris draws from a deep wellspring of inspiration
