Used Gibson F-5 Used Gibson F-5 1939, serial #EA5190, this is a rare pre-WWII, post-Loar era, F-5 mandolin featuring two-piece figured maple back, sides, and neck, spruce top, tobacco burst finish, ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, and original adjustable bridge, rosewood headstock veneer with pearl fern and "The Gibson" script inlay, white-bound body, neck and headstock with thin black/white purfling on the body, original gold-plated tailpiece with engraved "The Gibson" script, possibly original gold tuning machines with mother-of- pearl buttons (one screw missing, but still works), and a replacement small-sized, white/black bound ebony pickguard mounted with the original bracket. Includes a black Calton flight case with plush red interior.

We don't know the mandolin's early history, but in the early 1970s, famed Nashville luthier Randy Wood replaced the original fingerboard (block inlay) and headstock veneer (a simple fleur-de-lis and "Gibson" logo inlays) with a new fingerboard featuring dot inlays and a headstock veneer with the "The Gibson" and the well-known fern inlay, famous from the early 1920s Loar-era F-5s. Randy Wood also modified the interior braces, replaced portions of binding, and refinished the top finish to the classic dark brownish-red Loar-style sunburst. This mandolin is in excellent condition and sounds and plays like a dream. Randy Wood craftsmanship and life-long knowledge of these instruments is legendary and makes him uniquely qualified to do such work on this instrument. The result of Wood's work is a striking vintage mandolin with the right looks and mysterious warm, weighty, powerful tone for which such Gibson mandolins are famous.
