Get started with the old-time banjo: tuning, holding the banjo, bouncing along in the basic frailing or clawhammer pattern, playing chords, accompanying songs, adding melody notes, and changing tunings. Each class will give you a tune or song so you can make music immediately while also practicing techniques that will ready you to learn more. Written materials provided to help you practice at home. Please bring a tuner and a recording device.

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo 1

Learn the fundamentals of bluegrass banjo! Start with how to hold and tune the instrument, then quickly move on to using fingerpicks and playing first-position chords, rolls, and simple picking patterns. Please bring a five-string banjo (available to rent or purchase through our retail store). Plus, stick around the same evenings for Jason's Bluegrass Singing & Harmony class!

Grab your banjo and get ready to raise a ruckus! Explore Double C and other tunings, add more intricate melodies, vary the rhythmic patterns—all while building your repertoire of tunes and songs. Written materials provided to help you practice at home. This class follows from Beginning Clawhammer 1, but if you know a basic frailing or clawhammer pattern, can comfortably play some simple songs and chords in G tuning, and want more, then this class is for you. Please bring a tuner and recording device.

Beginning Bluegrass Banjo 2

Use songs you already know as well as new ones! Learn new tunings, voices, and positions. Work on first position chords, inversions, and new picking patterns and rolls. Connect with new folks and pick your way towards more fun! For advanced beginners, or those who've taken Beginning Bluegrass Banjo 1.
